What happens to epiphytic bromeliads in a windy spot?

چکیده

Abstract Several studies of hurricane damage on epiphyte communities implied that epiphytes might be in danger being blown off their host when subjected to strong wind. There is very limited knowledge about the mechanical impact wind may have epiphytes. Using a wind-triggered camera set-up, we observed how epiphytic tank bromeliads are affected by Despite offering relatively large area ‘attack’ airflow, moved little themselves. Rather than directly wind, upper crown tall trees with sway branches. Only substrate did not move, long broad leaves showed considerable disturbance due Our observations underline complexity system and emphasise our current understanding aspects epiphyte–host still limited.

We briefly describe how earlier studies led to the concept of "psychological moment" of between 50 and 60 ms duration. According to historical theories, within the psychological moment all events would be processed as co-temporal. More recently, a lin...

Diversity and distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in a Brazilian subtropical mangrove.

It is not unusual to find epiphytic bromeliads in mangroves, but most studies on mangrove vegetation do not record their presence. This study aimed to evaluate the diversity and distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in a subtropical mangrove. The richness, abundance and life form (atmospheric and tank) of bromeliads were recorded and compared among host tree species and waterline proximity. The ...
